USING THE RATCHET IS SO EASY, WHY SHOULD I USE THE REGULAR CLEAT AT ALL?Updated a year ago
Cause if you only use the ratchet the rope will always get loaded at the same spot when fully downhauled. This concentrated load will eventually squeeze down that part of the rope. When that happens the teeth of the clamping wheel cannot transport/tension the rope anymore.
The easiest way to avoid a fast partial rope wear and tear is to always use the regular cleat to pre-tension your sail.
Also it's much faster to pre-tension the sail using the regular cleat since each ratchet click results in only 8 mm of rope movement.
